Campaign Story

Malaysia has been hard hit with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and this has sent waves of worry across the country. As per reports, unemployment rates are at the highest they have ever been since the 1980s.

Almost 156,000 people have lost their jobs since the beginning of last year. Human resources minister M Saravanan, said,  141,191 workers were from the peninsula, 8,996 from Sarawak and 5,706 from Sabah. The state of Selangor recorded the highest increase in terms of unemployment numbers.

Around 580,000 households, which were previously in the M40 category, slipped into the B40 group owing to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the nation’s economy, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said. This represents a whooping 20% of the middle-income group in Malaysia. This is a big increase in the number of poor households as compared to 8.4% in 2021 and 5.6% in 2019 when the pandemic started.

B40, M40, and T20 refer to the household income classification in Malaysia. B40 represents the Bottom 40%, M40 represents the middle 40%, whereas T20 represents the top 20% of Malaysian household income.

The Solution

Skuad Prihatin Kemiskinan (SPK) is an initiative under Pertubuhan Al Khaadem that aims to empower the vulnerable and needy with the necessary skills to re-enter society and benefit their own families and community as a whole.
Since June 2021, 800 food packs were distributed to several locations around Klang Valley. In July, TISPK, in collaboration with Selangor FC distributed food packs at several food banks in Shah Alam. DYTM Raja Muda Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has also graciously consented to visit the food banks under the collaboration.
Instead of giving one off donations, SPK tackles the root cause of problems affecting poor households and neighbourhoods. They visit the poor and interact with them to understand their challenges and concerns. Backed by data, SPK then mobilise targeted and sustainable solutions for assistance to empower the disadvantaged families to stand on their own feet.
Keeping in mind the recent situation, TISPK, short for Trak Ihsan SPK has come forward with the objective to provide assistance to the M40 group who had fallen to the B40 category due to the effects of the pandemic. Donations to this campaign will help over 400 households receive food packs worth RM100. This pack includes food items, fresh fruits, eggs, fresh meat, and diapers. Beneficiaries requiring further assistance will be absorbed into SPK program and can participate in the 16 assistance programs provided.
SPK’s solutions include:
• helping the disadvantaged access upskilling and training programmes
• provide support for sustainable income generation, by helping the poor to access jobs and start up micro-enterprise opportunities
• ensuring that children go to school and have access to tutoring, as educational mobility is key to a better future
• building up the informal neighbourhood and community networks that surround and support low-income people
• articulating and advocating issues faced to the Government and local authorities to strengthen institutional and systemic support
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
