Malaysia has been hard hit with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and this has sent waves of worry across the country. As per reports, unemployment rates are at the highest they have ever been since the 1980s.
Almost 156,000 people have lost their jobs since the beginning of last year. Human resources minister M Saravanan, said, 141,191 workers were from the peninsula, 8,996 from Sarawak and 5,706 from Sabah. The state of Selangor recorded the highest increase in terms of unemployment numbers.
Around 580,000 households, which were previously in the M40 category, slipped into the B40 group owing to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the nation’s economy, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said. This represents a whooping 20% of the middle-income group in Malaysia. This is a big increase in the number of poor households as compared to 8.4% in 2021 and 5.6% in 2019 when the pandemic started.
B40, M40, and T20 refer to the household income classification in Malaysia. B40 represents the Bottom 40%, M40 represents the middle 40%, whereas T20 represents the top 20% of Malaysian household income.
