It is found that 13.9% of Malaysian children from low-income families and 8% from high-income families have some mental problems (Khazanah Research Institute).
Play is the highest expression of children’s development. Children learn so many important life skills through play. Unfortunately, children in Malaysia are deprived of toys and safe space for play. 4 in 10 households in Malaysia do not have any toy for children below 5 years (UNICEF).
Klinik Kenit is registered as a primary healthcare clinic with a focus on early child health services. It serves as the first contact for any health needs at all ages. There are two core services in helping families to support the healthy development of their children, the infant mental health services and the toy library. Early childhood is the crucial period of rapid changes when the architecture of the brain is most open to the influence of relationships and experiences. Research has shown how these early experiences are built into our bodies with a lasting impacts on learning, behaviour, and both physical and mental health. This is the reason why we need to identify parents and children with issues in their early attachment. And the best way to do this is in the primary healthcare setting where parents will bring their children for regular check-ups. Screening can be done to detect the issues using a validated tool to assist in providing the intervention.
Klinik Kenit are registered facilitators for Circle of Security program (early intervention program for parents and children). The program can assist parents to reflect on their parenting and to help them to respond better to their children’s behaviour. It is proven to help families with their relationships.
Direct beneficiaries of this program are children and families in PPR community, families at risk, refugees. Indirectly the general community. The initiative will help beneficiaries to have a better family relationships and help children to reach their full potential, to reduce the risk of having physical and mental health problems.
Children with behavioural and developmental issues are not being identified and not getting proper help and intervention in early-stage which can put them at risk of physical and mental illness. Many parents don’t have the appropriate awareness of this matter and hence an added difficulty to get help and comprehensive support.
Klinik Kenit’s social goal is to identify behavioural and developmental issues in young children and provide appropriate intervention while empowering parents towards excellent parenting. We envision a community that has the knowledge and the ability to support the children to reach their full potential. Only then we can see the impact on the brain development of the early years and achieve breakthrough solutions to some of the most challenges facing parents, communities and nations. The aim is to build a healthy and happy nation.
The business model here is to generate income through service fees from clinical practice as well as intervention program. Then we target to have 2 days a week for screening and intervention for high-risk groups – B40, refugees, and families affected with social issues. They will only need to pay minimal fees, screening is also done at their residential area (PPR flats) every Saturday. Continuation of care and their progress are monitored by the Klinik. From experience, the Klinik found that children from PPR community are lacking in certain play skills which causing them difficulties in learning at school. This will lead to bullying and depression in children as they cannot perform well in school. With the appropriate resources, the klinik can help 40 families and children per month and it targets to reach the surrounding community and create more awareness.
We are crowdfunding for developmental screening in the community. We want to screen as many children and families in the nearby PPR, the refugee community, and families with issues. We require more experienced team members to do the program and provide intervention services. The team aims to help 10 children per session, twice a week (screening and intervention) and about 40 children/families per month.
The objective of the project is to get the data on the level of our children’s development according to their age. The percentage of how many children are having developmental delays and which developmental skills are the most lacking in our children. We want to identify the core issues on why our children are not developing to their full potential and to provide solutions. This data will help not only us but the other body who are working with the community (policy maker, NGO etc).
The types of services provided include developmental screening programs using specific tools and play as well as intervention through play and parenting programs.
These initiatives will create more awareness in the community regarding infant mental health and importance of play in children’s development and how to stimulate children’s development through play. They will come to our centre to get more information and services.
For every RM 200 donated, the donor can help one child to get screened/assessed developmentally or one intervention session per child/family. The screening/assessment is done by a professional and usually takes about 1-2hours. The intervention is done by therapists at the toy library and a progress report is provided.
