Covid-19 Emergency: Help India Breathe

Key Points

Campaign Story

As per The World Health Organization one in every three new coronavirus cases globally is being reported in India.

GlobalSadaqah has launched an urgent appeal to help India fight Covid as the medical system collapses under overwhelming numbers. We have identified strong partners on the ground across multiple parts in India to take your donations directly on the ground.

A second wave of Covid is ravaging India, with 412,262 new cases on May 6 alone bringing India’s total to more than 21 million. Experts believe that even such large figures are severely undercounted and the reality on the ground is much much worse as India’s population is over 1.35 billion.

As the oxygen runs out, intensive care units are operating at full capacity and nearly all ventilators are in use. The death toll is mounting as you read this. Officials in Delhi have been urged to find more sites for cremations as the city’s morgues and crematoriums are overwhelmed by masses of Covid deaths. This is just one city where oxygen demand is up as much as 700%. It has become tough for families to find a place to bury and cremate their dead. Bodies are lying in the streets outside hospitals as the hospitals are at a breaking point with 2 people sharing a bed in many places.

Demand for oxygen has increased seven times since last month. Why Is Medical Oxygen Important? Oxygen therapy is crucial for severe COVID-19 patients with hypoxaemia – when oxygen levels in the blood are too low. Most hospitals in India aren’t equipped with independent plants that generate oxygen directly for patients, As a result, hospitals typically rely on liquid oxygen, which can be stored in cylinders and transported in cryogenic tankers.

Reports have emerged of hospitals asking patients to arrange for their own cylinders and of people dying even after being admitted due to low oxygen supplies. In addition to oxygen shortages, there are shortages of hospital beds, antiviral drugs, coronavirus test kits — virtually all the tools any country needs to fight a pandemic. This is how bad the situation is and this is just the tip of the ice-berg as India’s second wave of Covid-19 infections shows no signs of slowing down.

Donations to this campaign will help provide oxygen cylinders, medical equipment, aid packs, and other relief related work via our partners working directly on the ground.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
