Emergency Aid: Worst Earthquake In Two Decades Rattles Afghanistan
or donate via
Afghanistan has been hit by the deadliest earthquake to strike the country in two decades. The earthquake struck about 44km (27 miles) from the city of Khost and tremors were felt as far away as Pakistan and India.
More than 1,200 people have been killed and at least 3,500 injured. More than 10,000 homes and other buildings have been completely destroyed. Unknown numbers are buried in the rubble of ruined, often mud-built homes. Reports indicate that families are digging with bare hands to rescue others. This is a developing campaign and more information will be added as we get updates from the ground.

As per the latest reports on the ground, the death toll of children alone rose to 155. Nearly 250 children have been injured and 65 orphaned. The earthquake flattened homes and triggered landslides in the mountainous villages in the Paktika and Khost provinces. Nearly 800 families are living out in the open as their houses have been destroyed completely.

Rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and a lack of resources. If this was not enough, another earthquake hit parts of Afghanistan with a magnitude of 4.3 on Thursday morning, reported National Center for Seismology.
“People are digging grave after grave,” said Mohammad Amin Huzaifa, head of the Information and Culture Department in hard-hit Paktika, adding that at least 1,000 people had died in that province alone.
Our ground partners are continuously monitoring the situation and responding to emergency aid requests. The numbers are increasing as you read this and the Afghani public needs all the help and support that it can get. Let’s start with just RM10. Donations to this campaign will be used to provide emergency relief and food aid to Afghanis affected by the earthquake. As the situation progresses the team will focus on rehabilitation and construction works.

The latest earthquake came at a time when Afghanistan is battling a severe humanitarian disaster. According to the UN, 93% of households in Afghanistan suffer food insecurity. Lucien Christen, from the Red Cross, said Afghanistan’s “dire economic situation” meant “they’re [Afghan families] not able to put food on the table”.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. …And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
