Known for its incredible biodiversity, Borneo is home to numerous rare and unique animals. APE’s vision is to restore these landscapes, thus benefiting the wildlife and supporting local communities for years to come. APE launched the R.O.A.R (Restore Our Amazing Rainforest) initiative in Borneo. Donors have the opportunity to plan a tree for just MYR 25 (US $7)
How Does This Work?
All the trees will be planted on APE’s reforestation sites at the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, assigned by the Sabah Wildlife Department. The Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is home to one of the world’s ecosystems rich in biodiversity.
Saplings are planted once they reach a height of 2 ft. Within the first 2 years, the tree will grow to heights of more than 3 metres (approx. 10 ft) which reaches the understorey canopy level . To form a suitable tree canopy of more than 8 (approx. 26 ft) meters, it will take about 10 years.
Since the launch of the ROAR initiative in June 2020, APE has planted over more than 6000 trees in the Kinabatangan area. Most of the trees have been maintained up to 3 times (since the first planting) to ensure survival. The team has also spotted up to 34 different species of animals returning to what was once a fragmented area. Overall, APE has planted more than 52,179 trees and empowered 24 local families.
Your support for this reforestation project helps to create habitats for endangered animals (which include the Bornean orangutan and Borneo Pygmy Elephant), as well as offsetting your carbon footprint.
This can be something you do for yourself, or it can be dedicated to someone special for any occasion. As living and breathing organisms, trees make unique gifts as they can live for several decades, and they bring about significant benefits to our planet.
Donations to this campaign will be used to create and reconnect important forest corridors by planting trees on land that has been degraded through deforestation.
Each donor gets an E-certificate along with a photograph and GPS point of the planted tree. Pictures of the first round of plantation can be seen here.
We have 2 amazing gems of advice from Prophet Muhammad on going green and the importance of planting trees.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him.” [Bukhari]
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Even if the Resurrection were established upon one of you while he has in his hand a sapling, let him plant it.” [Ahmad]
Your trees have been planted in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary!
These trees will be maintained for a year which includes us going back to the site to clear weeds and vines. In just 5 years, these trees will grow up to 5m in height and in less than 10 years, it will converge with the rest of the trees to form the forest canopy. We hope to hear gibbons and birds singing away, monkeys swinging from tree to tree and maybe even an orangutan nesting way up in your trees!
The certificate and tree coordinates have been emailed to the respective donors.
