Eradicating Period Poverty in Detention Centres Across Klang Valley
or donate via
About 1 in 4 women and girls between the ages of 13 and 35 are finding it harder to manage their periods since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a survey by NGOs: WASH United, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (Waggs) and UNICEF. The survey also found that 47% women have found it more difficult to access menstrual supplies since the pandemic.
Period poverty is defined as a menstruating person’s lack of access to safe and hygienic use of sanitary menstrual goods. Period poverty is not a new issue in Malaysia. It has been reported that many women and girls at some point have used coconut husks, newspaper sheets, and banana leaves to name a few, in the place of a sanitary napkin.
This is the case outside. This campaign aims to help women and girls in detention centres across the Klang Valley. Lack of access to sanitary pads on a monthly basis among the women and girls in detention centres is alarming especially in the hygiene requirements during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many women resorted to the usage of materials such as paper and cloth, which is extremely unhygienic and can lead to infections and other related health concerns. Some women just leave the bleeding as is without the use of lining materials. Mental, physical, psychological and health of these women is severely impacted.
Donations to this campaign will be used to support women in detention centres by providing them washable sanitary pad that instantly reduced the burden of monthly purchases.
This campaign will progress in stages, as the urgent need is to cater for 200 women and girls. They will be given a set of Athena washable pads that consists of 7 pcs pad and a wet bag for pad storage purposes. Each set cost RM 199 and can be used for up to 7 years depending on the usage. It’s a safe, comfortable and hygienic solution. Furthermore, it will reduce landfills burden and improve the cleanliness at the detention facilities across the Klang Valley.
Let’s start with just MYR 10 and help the women and girls across Klang Valley with basic access to safe and hygienic menstrual products.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
