Heavy monsoon downpours in Bangladesh’s northeastern and northern regions have stranded millions of people. Much of the country’s northeast is underwater and the situation is getting worse as heavy downpour continues. This is a developing campaign and more information will be added as we get updates from the ground.

Five more people have died in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of flood deaths in Bangladesh to 73, according to officials. An estimated 2,000 children were suffering from severe acute malnutrition before the floods hit.

According to UNICEF representative, Yett Sheldon lifesaving treatment for the condition also has been disrupted. Moreover, 90% of health facilities have been flooded, interrupting immunization and other vital services. 49 fatalities were reported from drowning while the rest died in flood-related cases, including lightning strikes, snake bites, diarrhoea, skin diseases, and landslides.

More than 4,000 people have been infected with waterborne diseases. Crops across the country have been devastated. Classroom activities were suspended at 4,000 primary and 917 secondary schools and were partially affected in 102 secondary schools in 18 districts.

Floods in Bangladesh’s northeast have spread to other districts as heavy monsoon rains continue to pummel Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, leaving millions of people stranded without power, food and drinking water.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman said on Saturday the flooding is the “worst in 122 years” in the two districts as, according to him, the level of floodwater rose by 8 feet in two days.

90% of Sunamganj and 65% of Sylhet flooded. The local administration estimates around 3.5 million people have been affected by the floods in the two districts alone. The worst-hit Sunamganj district in Bangladesh is almost disconnected from the rest of the country.

Lightning strikes triggered by the storms had killed at least 30+ people in Bangladesh since Friday afternoon. Among them were three children aged 12 to 14. Another four people were killed when landslides hit their hillside homes in the port city of Chittagong. 

Floods reportedly caused widespread damage to habitation, crops, roads and highways across vast swathes of the country.

Water levels in all major rivers across the country were rising, according to the flood forecasting and warning centre in Dhaka, the capital. The country has about 130 rivers. Schools have been turned into relief shelters to house entire villages inundated in a matter of hours by rivers that suddenly burst their banks. The flooding is being described as the country's worst ever.

“The situation is bad. More than four million people have been stranded by flood water,” said Sylhet region chief government administrator Mosharraf Hossain. The Sylhet region is among the worst affected. 

Nearly the entire region was without electricity. The flooding forced Bangladesh’s third-largest international airport in Sylhet to shut down on Friday.

Before this week’s rains, the Sylhet region was still recovering from its worst floods in nearly two decades late last month, when at least 10 people were killed and four million others were affected. Back to back flooding has brought the region to its knees.
