A powerful earthquake struck Türkiye's southern provinces and neighbouring Syria, leaving at least 6957 people dead within Turkish borders and killing more than 2500 people in war-torn Syria.

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck southern Türkiye and northwestern Syria, killing almost 44,000 people as buildings collapsed and triggering a search for survivors trapped in the rubble.

Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said that the 7.7 magnitude quake struck at 4:17 am (0117 GMT) and was centred in Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province on Monday.

The fears are the toll could rise much higher in the earthquake zones, over 41,000 injuries, and the collapse of many residential buildings and still searching for survivors. This humanitarian crisis has left thousands of families homeless and vulnerable to severe weather conditions. The quake was felt in Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, Greece, and Palestine.

The immediate action plan is to alleviate their suffering and provide them with the necessities they lack such as meals, food baskets, clothing, and winter aid to families affected by the earthquake in northern Syria and Türkiye, financial assistance to the families of the victims and the injured, medicine and medical aid, and shelter for families whose houses have been demolished, which will be distributed according to the needs of each family.
