Campaign Story

As per the United Nations, Yemen is suffering the world's worst humanitarian crisis as a years-long war rumbles on, with over four million people displaced and two-thirds of its 30-million population dependent on aid. In the last few days, heavy rains and flash flooding in Yemen have left several people dead and caused large-scale damage to multiple homes and buildings. One can only start to imagine the situation on the ground in Yemen when we look at things in context. The people are suffering from a humanitarian crisis, the medical infrastructure is next to non-existent, people are fasting in Ramadan, and at the same time the country is facing the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. 

Thousands of families have been affected by the flooding. The homes of 167 families and counting have been either partially or completely damaged. The flooding caused multiple large-scale damage in Aden, Abyan, Al Dhale’e, Lahj, Hadramaut, Ma’rib and Ta’iz. The flood has cut off the main north-south road to the capital Sanaa and sparked fears about the spread of water-borne diseases as well.

More than 3,730 families (22,380 people) have been affected as of May 4 and the numbers are increasing as you read this. Majority of these are internally displaced people (IDPs). Almost two-thirds of the families, who require food, shelter, non-food items and water, sanitation and hygiene assistance, live in the southern provinces of Aden, Lahj and Abyan. 

Yemen's historic city of Tarim was left in ruins and suffered sever damage such that it has been declared a disaster area by local authorities. Tarim is famous for its mud-brick buildings and hundreds of mosques, including al-Muhdhar, which has the tallest minaret in the country. Most of these mud-brick buildings have collapsed due to the floods or heavily damaged forcing the families to flee.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
