Campaign Story

Cambodia is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. Nearly 74% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood and has no other source of income. Most of the families have been severely affected by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and have lost their sources of livelihood. Many families don’t even have the surety to have 2 proper meals in a day.

If this was not enough, about 50% of villages across Cambodia still lack access to clean water due to factors like climate change, population growth and urban development, which have led to a steady increase in water demands, according to Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, Cham Prasidh.

The majority of the Cambodians depend on river water and rain for meeting their daily needs. Using unclean water sources, the community becomes vulnerable to water-borne diseases such as cholera etc. It gets even worse if the disease spreads to the elderly and children as getting treatment is also not a solution for many poor households.

Iltizam Relief Society is working on the ground in Cambodia to build a waqf of clean water wells. One well will be shared by five houses. Each house contains about seven household members. The team has chosen to create ring wells because of its durable construction and ease of use. The families can easily access the water for their daily usage. In future phases of the project, the team will explore adding an electric pump that routes water directly to the houses.

Donations to this campaign will help meet the water needs of poor and needy families in the remote villages of Cham and Thom districts. We aim to fund the construction of  50 wells with this campaign.

Sa’ad ibn Ubadah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “Which charity is best?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “A drink of water.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. [Timirdhi]
