Campaign story

Officially, Sabah state is among Malaysia's poorest areas, and despite the country being independent for 65 years, many of the rural settlements in this state can only be reached by boat or 4x4 vehicles. Therefore, building a water well will be extremely costly and only a handful of contractors are willing to undertake the work due to challenging logistics in rural Sabah.

Location and construction of the wells

If the water wells are constructed on an island off the coast of Sabah, the price will go up. The water well we constructed in Sabah also has a water tank, a water tower, and a water pump that is powered by a diesel or petrol motor. To keep kids from falling into the water well or contaminating it, the area around it is also being gated, and the well itself has a concrete top.

Water well project by Iltizam

Through this project, 100 families will be able to access clean water. Wells will be constructed mainly on remote islands because it is very unlikely they will get tap water from the government. Therefore, this water well will provide benefits for a very long time. Their primary source of clean water is rain collection in many of these isolated islands. During summers due to less rainfall they will face a water crisis. Iltizam’s water well project will also benefit the village’s or island’s mosque and schools, if any, which are also sourcing clean water from rainwater harvesting.

Who are the beneficiaries of this campaign?

Poor and remote villages on the Banggi Islands, Sabah. We have just finished five water wells, but four more villages require them.

How will the raised funds help the beneficiaries?

Currently, all these islands in Sabah are relying on rainwater harvesting. In drought season, they will have a water crisis. With this water well project, they will have an alternative and sustainable source of clean water. This water well will not only benefit the villages but also the schools and mosques, if any.
