Campaign Story
On 18th August, an 8-hour long heavy downpour on the peak of Mount Jerai caught the villagers at its foothill and people in the town by surprise and unprepared when the water rushed downstream and wreaked havoc on villages along its path and in the town of Yan, in the state of Kedah. The population in Yan is
78,000 with some 53,500 aged 18 and above. Such was the ferocity that villagers called it
'tsunami from the mountain' as the mud waters reached as high as 1.5m.
“Fencing and cement structures beside the river broke when floating debris crashed in and then water poured rapidly into the house, like a tsunami. I called out to my family to flee but the road turned into a murky river and the current became too strong for the car to move,” said one of the affected villagers.
About 800 houses in Yan and another 200 in Kuala Muda were hit. The floods claimed six victims and affected over 1,000 homes with many people still missing. The body of the last victim was found under piles of logs by the rescue team. Apart from Yan, towns and villages in Gurun and Merbok in another district too were
washed away by floods. This is
first time ever that such massive floods happened in their area. The flash floods in both districts also caused
landslides, destroying properties and sweeping away vehicles and belongings. Villagers living at the foothill of Mount Jerai are being evacuated to safety.
Authorities state that most villagers in affected areas relied on community water supply, and most of the pipes were swept away in the floods.
As you read this, more injured people and families are being rescued from destroyed or submerged properties. The numbers are only expected to increase at this period of time as the rescue mission continues.
Donations to this campaign aims to help at least 400 families with estimated household of 2,000 people in the Merbok sub-district in Kedah. 80% of the funds will be spent on food aid, and 20% for providing hygiene kits.
The number of people affected is devastating. The people of Kedah need our help. The Messenger of Allah said: “
Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
