Campaign story

Congenital heart defects (CHD) are the most common birth defect in the world, affecting every 1 in 100 babies. Some common causes of CHDs are a hole in the heart, leaky valves, or malformed heart chambers. Despite its prevalence, most cases of CHD occur due to unknown causes. It cannot be prevented by vaccination or improved nutrition.

In Malaysia, 5,000 babies are born with a heart defect every year. Of these, 3,000 will require surgery at some point in their lives—some before their first birthday. Advances in medical technology and surgical techniques have meant that mortality from CHD has gone down significantly since the 1990s. Unfortunately, due to the high number of cases, long waiting lists, and expensive costs, not every child will be able to make it to their surgery, meaning that children are dying preventable deaths.

About Malaysian Congenital Heart Foundation's campaign: This campaign will collect funds for a central fund that will fund heart surgeries for selected patients referred from government hospitals. The surgery will be held at a cardiac centre in Malaysia, with funds covering the surgery costs entirely. Since the programme's inception in 2020, we have managed to fund surgeries for seven patients, with costs totalling more than RM150,000. The recipients of our fund have, praise be to Allah SWT, grown up as normal children with a much better quality of life.
