Building Malaysia’s Tomorrow: Tackling Mental Health Today
This campaign is Funded!
29% of Malaysians are living with mental illness where 4 out of 10 adults and 1 out of 10 children (5-16) are affected. 40% of Malaysians will suffer from some sort of mental health illness in their lifetime. At the start of 2019 itself it was reported that nearly half a million Malaysians experienced symptoms of depression and over 424,000 children experienced mental health issues. These numbers shot though the roof during the Covid-19 pandemic that saw multiple suicide cases across the country.
The Malaysian Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Association (MYCAPs) quoted a World Health Organisation (WHO) estimate that 20 per cent of children worldwide suffer from mental health issues, many of whose conditions go undetected and untreated. According to WHO, 50 per cent of mental health problems begin before the age of 14, and 75 per cent start in their 20s.
Malaysia's psychiatrist-to-patient ratio is staggeringly-low, only 10 percent of the amount recommended by the WHO. This is a serious issue that raises questions on the country's future.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease the difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter.” [Tirmidhi]
